Obituary for Sidney L. Morris

Passed away suddenly at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket on November 6th, 2018, at 90 years of age. Predeceased one year ago by his soulmate, Sheila (Mellor) Morris. Loving dad of Shawn (Sydella) & Katrina (Mike). Proud grandpa of Tyler (Dawn), Connor, Sierra & Heather. Survived by sister Loretta and predeceased by brothers John & Winston. A Newmarket resident for the past 3 decades, Sid grew up in Toronto’s Cabbagetown neighbourhood. He attended Duke of York Public School, Central Tech School and York University. Sid met Sheila in the Trident Club at Timothy Eaton Memorial Church and they later became members of Walmer Road Baptist Church, where Sid taught Sunday school for many years. Sid enjoyed a long career as a financial advisor working into his 80s and only retired to care for his beloved Sheila. He worked for several investment firms throughout his career before founding Sidney L Morris Securities, which later became Sidney L Morris & Associates. He valued his relationships with his clients and thought of them more as friends. Sid was well known as a kind-hearted and generous man and was always willing to help anyone in need. Sid was well read and had the ability to talk at length on any topic. He was an intelligent and thoughtful man with an impressive photographic memory. He easily made friends every where he went and left a lasting impression on everyone he met. As a big sports enthusiast, Sid participated in many throughout his life (paddling, boxing, football, baseball, basketball, track & field, golf & 5-pin bowling) and he sponsored numerous amateur sports teams & programs. Notably, he was named to the list of ‘Who’s Who In Canadian Sport’ after decades as a participant, coach and administrator in various sports organizations; he helped develop the Ontario Sports Lottery to finance amateur sport; he was awarded the Queens Jubilee Medal and inducted into the O5PBA Hall of Fame. A Celebration of Life will be held in his honour on Sunday, November 25th from 4-7pm at Newmarket Seniors’ Meeting Place - 474 Davis Drive in Newmarket. If desired, donations may be made in Sid’s memory to the Southlake Foundation or the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
